South London Black Music Archive

If you haven’t been down yet, this is the last week you can get to this exhibition at Peckham Space.

“Peckham Space presents The South London Black Music Archive, an exhibition by artist Barby Asante that aims to celebrate, preserve and investigate South Londoners’ personal relationships with moments in black music history.”

What does this mean? The exhibition is essentially a mix of culturally significant objects such as ticket stubs, album covers etc. within the world of black music, interspersed with pieces that tell more personal stories of the way black music has touched the lives of South Londoners, including selections left by visitors to the exhibition. A nod to the significance of black music on British culture since the 1950s.

1000 Cranes for Japan – Design Award

Last year we posted something we thought was a great idea – 1000 Cranes for Japan. A series of designed origami pieces were made available to buy on-line, with all the proceeds going towards the victims of the earthquake. Nice to see they have just been nominated in the Graphics category of the Designs of the Year 2012 Award from London’s pioneering and much lauded Design Museum.

Richie Culver for EASTPAK

Check out these wonderful backpacks that friend Richie Culver has created for Eastpak. Watch the video about why and how Richie created these for the best backpack brand in the world!

Ben Eine / Japan

Last night Ch.4 aired Graffiti Wars as part of their Street Summer thing. They mostly covered the Banksy vs Robbo skirmishes… But it was great to see some of Ben Eine’s work too. He just hit Japan and is adding some of his typographic touches to the scenery out there. Check it out:

Acts of Kindness / Michael Landy

In 2001 Michael Landy took over a C&A store that had closed down around Oxford Circus and turned it into a life changing performance art space: he literally destroyed ALL of his posessions in there, shredded, ground, burnt everything he owned. You can read about how and why  HERE

He then created the ‘Art Bin’ where he invited artists to come and destroy their failed pieces. Luminaries such as Damien Hirst, Gillian Wearing, Tracey Emin and Mark Titchner all turned up to discard their unwanted works. Read more HERE

I have since thought he is quite an interesting man. And his most recent project is awesome, its a study of the intricate ways in which people do both intentional and completely random ACTS OF KINDNESS for each other on the London Underground… You can read all the stories that people have sent in HERE

The plan is to then place these randomly along the network JUST TO SPREAD THE LOVE.

SUSO33

The artist behind the name SUSO33 began to give form to the icon for which he’d later become known on the street, at the desk of an art college in North Madrid. It was the end of the ’80s. Graffiti was invading the minds of young people like him, hypnotizing with the message “‘you can do this, it’s in your hands”. And like many others, he enlisted himself in the war that would revolutionize the streets and underground scene in the capital, with the difference being that he had a prodigious imagination.
